Braies Lake

The Braies Lake is probably the most beautiful lake in the Italian Alps and Dolomites, and therefore always well frequented.

The lake is situated at 1494m above sea level at the end of the Braies valley. The lake impresses above all by its turquoise green colour and the Seekofel mountain range in the background.

The lake is known from the television series "Un passo dal cielo" or in German "Die Bergpolizei - Ganz nah am Himmel".  


Where is Braies Lake located?

The Braies Lake is located at the end of the Braies Valley, a side valley of the Puster Valley. The crossing to the Braies valley is located between the villages of Monguelfo and Villabassa.

From us to the Braies Lake you need 25-30 minutes by car.

How do you get to Braies Lake?

It is not always possible to reach the lake by car. In the period from the beginning of July to mid-September the road to the lake is closed to private traffic between 10.00 am and 3.00 pm.

During this time it is advisable to take the bus 441 from Santa Maddalena to Monguelfo railway station and from there the bus 439 to Braies Lake.

Where can I park?

There is a large parking area directly in front of the lake. There is a fee for parking at the lake - a full day ticket costs 8,00 Euro, but it costs the same if you stay only one hour.

There are another 3 parking areas between 300m and 1 km from the lake, these parking areas are a bit more affordable.

Is it possible to swim in the Pragser Wildsee?

You can swim in the lake Braieser, but even in midsummer the temperature is only 20°C maximum.

Is there a boat rental at the lake?

There is a boat rental which is open daily from 10.00 am - 5.00 pm from the beginning of June to the end of September. Prices: 1/2 hour 18,00 Euro - 1 hour 28,00 Euro.

Is it possible to eat at Braies Lake - Which restaurants at Braies Lake are fine?

There is a hotel with a restaurant and a few snack bars directly on the lake, but they are expensive and of average quality. It is recommended to eat in Braies Valley at the Gasthof Huber in Schmieden or at the Bergasthof & Restaurant Moserhof. Both restaurants have a very good value for money.


Tips:

In order to enjoy the lake in peace and quietness, you should go there early in the morning (before 09.00) or late in the afternoon (from 5.00 pm on), especially in high season.

You can also combine the lake tour with a hike to the Grünwaldalm (30 minutes ascent), Hochalm Fojedära (2 hours ascent) or to the Seekofel (summit tour with a fantastic view of the lake - 4 hours ascent).
