Monte Paterno - Sentiero attrezzato De Luca-Innerkofler (2744m)

on the old war footpaths

General information: A recommended peak ascent on the traces of the First World War. Mountain experience and surefootedness are a necessity in these spectacular surroundings. In early summer you can still encounter remnants of snow and ice in the tunnels, which may lead to a cancellation of the tour.

Ascent: From the Rifugio Auronzo (2,326m) via the gravel path to the Paternsattel and further to the Drei Zinnen Hütte (2,405m). Near the hut a signpost shows the way to the "Galleria Paterno". On short stretches one goes through rock tunnels to the entrance of the Paternstollen.

Characteristics: Varied via ferrata with access through a gallery from the First World War (headlamp absolutely necessary)!  From the Gamsscharte short steep ascent, completely secured with steel ropes (ascent on the left - descent on the right). Interesting ascent on old war paths, mostly secured with steel ropes. Some exposed unsecured passages have to be overcome, both in the ascent (in the summit area, short easy climb) as well as in the descent (absolute surefootedness).

Descent: From the summit, take the ascent path back to the Gamsscharte and descend to the right through the south-east gully. One follows the old war path back to the Paternsattel. The path, which is only partially secured, has very exposed passages and requires absolute surefootedness.
